The Addiction Crisis in Newmarket

Newmarket is the regional hub of York Region, Ontario. No publicly reported city-level overdose death counts for Newmarket alone are available from coroner or public health data sources. 02. A crisis that did not start this month

The 2024 mortality rate was 14.3 deaths per 100,000 people, down from a pandemic peak of 19.4 per 100,000 in 2021. Fentanyl or a fentanyl analogue was detected in more than 83 percent of 2024 deaths. Prescription benzodiazepines appeared in 45 percent of deaths in 2024, up sharply from 33 percent in 2023, signalling an increasingly complex toxic drug supply. 03. Why is it getting worse?

The opioid crisis in York Region and Newmarket is driven by a contaminated, unregulated drug supply in which fentanyl and fentanyl analogues appear in roughly three-quarters of toxicity deaths. Prescription benzodiazepines and xylazine are increasingly found alongside opioids, producing deeper sedation and making naloxone alone less effective. Broader upstream drivers include social isolation, housing instability, untreated mental health conditions, and economic precarity. York Region's geography — suburban sprawl with limited transit — can reduce access to harm-reduction and treatment services. The region has no supervised consumption site, meaning people are more likely to use alone, increasing the risk of fatal overdose without a bystander present to administer naloxone.

04. Where hope still lives

Communities across Ontario are responding with naloxone distribution, harm reduction programs, and peer support networks. Every person trained in naloxone use is a potential life saved.
